Coonan downplays wireless interference risk
Federal Communications Minister Helen Coonan has played down Labor concerns that broadband Internet in rural areas will be interrupted by common household appliances under the Coalition’s national network.
The Government says its plan will give fast broadband to 99 per cent of the population.
Capital cities will be given fibre-optic broadband access, while regional Australia will receive wireless technology rolled out by Optus-Elders partnership Opal with almost $1 billion in Government support.
Labor says cordless phones, microwave ovens and garage doors could interfere with the wireless connection in remote areas.
But Senator Coonan says the risk of that is minimal.
“Licence spectrum would overcome some potential risk of interference from other users and [Optus-Elders partnership] Opal has indicated that opportunities for purchasing licensed spectrum in the market place will be obviously pursued,” she said.

The above clear exposition of the state of play follows Helen's "Well, I don't think I'd call it "circumventing" the ACCC, I think it would more characterise it as accommodating the kind of adjustments that might be needed to enable a new very risky bill that's going to cost in the order of $4 billion. And if the current regulatory regime can't yield that outcome, well then I would look at what might be required.".

Please convince me that this silly moo is not the worst Minister since those non blondes, Kaye Patterson and Judy Moylan beached themselves on the despatch box and disappeared sans trace?!
